Is Mudmasky Eye Serum Right For You?

Before we get into the details, here’s the TL;DR if you just want to know whether or not Mudmasky Eye Serum is right for you.

  • Skin type? All
  • Texture? Thick gel-cream
  • Fragrance? No
  • Cruelty free? Yes
  • Cost? $63 USD for 1 fl oz (30 mL)

What Are The Key Ingredients in Mudmasky Eye Serum?

In order to determine how well Mudmasky Eye Serum performs, we’ll have to evaluate the key ingredients in this formula. But before we get started, we have to point out a problem with this formula: the brand uses pretty low concentrations of these “key” ingredients.

We know this by looking at the ingredient list (which is in order of descending concentrations). All of the “key” ingredients — kakadu plum, pomegranate, perilla, and red algae — are listed after the preservative ethylhexylglycerin, which is typically used in concentrations of 0.3 to 1%.

This means you’re getting less than 1% of these key ingredients. Keeping this in mind, we’ll still explain the ingredients in Mudmasky Eye Serum and how they may benefit your skin.

Hydrolyzed Collagen

You may already know that collagen is the protein that keeps your skin looking firm and youthful, which may cause you to look for skin care products that include collagen.

Before you do that, here’s what you need to know: collagen is a very large, complex molecule with long chains of amino acids that form a triple helix structure. This inhibits the protein from being absorbed deeper than the epidermis (the uppermost layer of skin).

So if collagen can’t penetrate deep into the skin, should you just forget about using collagen skin care products? Not necessarily.

One way to get around this issue is to look for products that contain hydrolyzed collagen, such as the Mudmasky Eye Serum.

Hydrolyzed collagen has been broken down into smaller chains of amino acids called peptides. It is theorized that topical application of these collagen precursors may increase collagen production (if the peptides make their way down into the dermis). However, this theory has not been proven.

While we wait for more research to be done on the topical application of hydrolyzed collagen, it’s still a good ingredient to use because we know for sure that the peptides will hydrate the skin.

That’s because peptides function as humectants. A humectant is a hygroscopic substance that has a molecular structure with several hydrophilic (water loving) groups. These groups hydrogen bond with water, essentially “grabbing” it and holding it on the skin.

Furthermore, humectants provide temporary anti-aging effects because the extra hydration is extra volume, which effectively plumps out the skin and makes lines and wrinkles less noticeable. However, this effect is transient — as soon as the moisture content in skin decreases, lines and wrinkles will return to normal size.

Kakadu Plum

Did you know the Kakadu plum is the richest vitamin C source of any fruit? In fact, this superfruit contains up to 100 times the pure vitamin C content of an orange.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can protect the skin from free radicals, stimulate collagen production, and decrease the appearance of dark spots through inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase.

Ultimately, the Kakadu plum extract in the Mudmasky Eye Serum formula should help to brighten, smooth, and firm the skin around your eyes.

Pomegranate Leaf Extract

The form of pomegranate used in the Mudmasky Eye Serum formula is pomegranate flower extract.

According to a publication in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, pomegranate flower extract “was found to contain a large amount of polyphenols and exhibit enormous reducing ability, both indicative of potent antioxidant ability.”

Using antioxidant-rich extracts is beneficial because antioxidants protect your skin from the damaging effects of free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin.

Perilla Frutescens Leaf Extract

Perilla leaf extract isn’t an ingredient that we commonly see in skin care formulations, but after doing some research we found out that it can offer a few benefits to the skin due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

After 8 weeks, the researchers found that the serum with Perilla frutescens leaf extract could increase skin hydration and skin elasticity. The problem is that we don’t know what concentration of Perilla frutescens leaf extract was used in this study.

We only know that the concentration of Perilla extract in the Mudmasky Eye Serum formula is less than 1%. Is that enough to produce noticeable results? Unfortunately, we can’t say for certain.

Red Algae (Gigartina Stellata)

Gigartina Stellata is the red algae extract used in Mudmasky Eye Serum. Like most algae extracts, it can help to increase your skin’s hydration due to its ability to retain water.

It also provides an immediate tightening effect by forming a film on the skin. This film also helps to prevent dehydration and protect against pollutants, thereby helping to reduce inflammation.

Mudmasky Eye Serum Reviews

There aren’t very many Mudmasky Eye Serum reviews on the brand’s website at the time of writing this review. In fact, there’s just 11 customer reviews, and all of them gave this serum a 5-star rating.

For example, one review says, “I received the eye serum in BoxyCharm and just love it. I can see an instant difference under my eyes as soon as I apply it. It is amazing.”

Other reviews confirm that the Mudmasky Eye Serum really does provide fast results, as one reviewer shares, “Loving it. I have major problems with swelling and darkness under my eyes, always have. But I don’t say this lightly….I have used this a week and boy what a difference already. Isn’t that crazy? I can’t help wondering what a month will look like and it feels good too.”

And another 5-star review says, “I, too, got this in my Boxycharm. At first I was like oh no, another eye cream. Then I looked at the reviews and decided to try it. It is so thick, it’s like applying a mask like an eye gel except you can make it thin too. It depends on how thick you want it. This is one of the only things I’ve had that I woke up in the morning and saw something different. Smoother, brighter. So I applied it again under my eyes and between my brows to keep from wrinkling. It’s actually good. Surprise. I’ve never had an eye bag problem but at 47 I’ve got lines between my eyes which is my thing. So sleeping with this on seems to help. It contains vitamin c which I’m sensitive to and I can feel that but it’s not caused a reaction.”

Our Verdict

Overall, we think that Mudmasky Eye Serum contains beneficial key ingredients, but it appears that the brand uses low concentrations of key ingredients since they are listed after the preservative on the ingredient list.

What Are Some Alternatives to Mudmasky Eye Serum?

If you’re looking for skin care products to address the signs of aging, one brand we recommend is Formulyst. Formulyst maximizes the use of powerful ingredients and minimizes the use of superficial ones, resulting in clinically advanced skin care solutions that help promote healthy, more youthful-looking skin.

For example, Formulyst’s Anti-Aging Concentrate can help to address multiple signs of aging at once. This serum contains natural ingredients like squalane, green tea, vitamin C, and vitamin E, which provide powerful antioxidant activity to protect the skin against environmental free radicals that are known to degrade collagen. In addition, this serum contains Matrixyl 3000, a peptide complex that works to restore and maintain the skin’s youthful appearance by signaling to cells to produce more collagen.

Another brand that balances the power of plants with cutting edge science is Carrot & Stick. Not only is Carrot & Stick good for your skin, it is also good for the environment as the formulas skip harmful chemicals commonly found in skin care products.
