The link between food and skincare isn't a new revelation—whether it's dousing skin with honey to reap its anti-inflammatory benefits, smearing avocado on dry patches in an effort to hydrate, or concocting a DIY pumpkin mask when exfoliation is deemed necessary. But what happens when actual skincare products offers an ingredient list that is entirely edible? Enter Edible Beauty Australia, a skincare and wellness line dedicated to providing the highest level of pure, botanical, and “edible products” for youthful, vibrant skin. Founder Anna Mitosis transitioned into a career in naturopathy after being diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic at the age of 18. But it wasn't until she worked at a fertility clinic that she realized her skincare products were definitely lacking. "The Edible Beauty range was created in 2014 while I was working at a natural fertility clinic," she says. "I was recommending to my patients that in addition to changes in their food and lifestyle routines, they make changes to their personal care products as well." Shocked to find that there were very few options available for skincare products that were natural, luxurious, and therapeutic, she set out to create her own.

On creating edible beauty products...

Our skin, as the largest organ of the body, absorbs close to 60 percent of the products we put on it. What's more, studies reveal more than 280 toxins linked to personal care products found in newborn umbilical cords, making what we put on our skin even more important during conception and pregnancy. "The endocrine disrupting effects of ingredients found in our personal care products is of great concern," says Mitosis. "My mission was to create a brand that embodied holistic beauty and educated people on the importance of using natural, toxin- free ingredients on the skin."

For her, the gold standard of safety was having each product be entirely edible. Mitosis believes that because we absorb such a large percentage of what we put on our skin, it's just as important as our diet in terms of staying healthy.

Their formulas are free of the usual offenders: SLS, PEGs, parabens, phthalates, benzyl peroxide, synthetic fragrances, phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, silicones, mineral oils, and cocoamidopropyl betaine, and formaldehyde.

On using plant-based ingredients...

When formulating a skincare product, Mitosis goes back to her nutritionist and naturopathic roots. "I always have broader naturopathic principles in mind," she says. "These include harnessing the healing power of nature, thinking about skincare concerns holistically, and addressing the underlying cause of a condition rather than just providing symptomatic relief." By using exotic, natural, and certified organic ingredients, Mitosis hopes to encourage people to experience the benefits of nourishing themselves from the inside out.

On the importance of using exotic wild-crafted plants...

The line uses many Australian wildcrafted botanicals in their formulas that possess both therapeutic benefits and strong antioxidant profiles. "These plants are special in that they are found growing in their natural habitat in arid parts of Australia," explains Mitosis. "Their makeup protects themselves against the harsh environment and potent sun that they are growing in, which is then transferred across to our skin, providing us with incredible skin protective and anti-aging qualities."

Take the snowflower seed, for example, a supercharged Australian botanical that's been shown to have 50 times the antioxidant activity of vitamin E and 100 times that of vitamin C. This means it not only brightens the skin, but it also provides effective support for healthy collagen production and skin cell renewal. No wonder it's a key ingredient in the line's hero facial oil.

On not compromising luxury...

"Healthy and therapeutic can absolutely also be luxurious," says Mitosis. "I designed this range for those who want high-grade pure natural products that are also a pleasure to use." Everything from the invigorating scents and textures to the simple packaging feels like luxury.

On being ethical and cruelty-free...

"The natural beauty market has definitely experienced tremendous growth since I first started the business," she notes. "However, in addition to this trend for 'safe' beauty products, there's an increasing demand for ethical products." It's true, now more than ever, consumers are becoming more engrossed in process versus product. And for Edible Beauty Australia, sustainability is at the core of the their DNA—drom their recyclable Miron glass bottles and sustainably- sourced packaging to their reef-friendly sunscreen.

On their hero products...

When formulating her products, Mitosis considers the solutions she wants each one to have. A cleansing milk, for example, may need to be anti-microbial rather than just hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties. "Typically, foaming cleansers will 'clean' the skin, but they may actually contribute to acne as they strip the skin of its natural oil balance, sending sebum producing cells into overdrive," she says. This cleansing milk features a soothing, milky texture and gently washes away impurities, allowing the skin to feel balanced and refreshed.

The key ingredient in this serum is kakadu plume and Mitosis regards it as a true superstar. "Kakadu plum is a standout botanical, as it contains a plant- based source of vitamin C along with an ability to fast-track skin healing and provide anti-acne support." The formula is an effective way to smooth fine lines, even skin tone, and restore elasticity.

This micro-exfoliant features desert lime and wattle seed extracts. Mitosis touts both ingredients for their antioxidant-rich properties, noting desert lime stimulates collagen production while wattle seed's high amino acid content promotes youthful, supple skin. The tiny pearls found in this gentle exfoliant work to hydrate and improve the efficacy of the other ingredients.
