It's ironic because I've never been the best about diligently using sunscreen daily before this — I just assumed it wasn't overly necessary since I was working inside and not directly exposed to the sun. Well, that silly assumption went straight out the window recently when my boss asked me to work on a story about wearing SPF indoors. And every single dermatologist I spoke to stressed how important it is.
"It's a common misconception that you don't need to wear sunscreen when you're indoors," Joyce Park, a California-based, board-certified dermatologist, told me. "Standard glass windows block UVB but not UVA rays, which can penetrate deeper into the skin [and] are the main contributing factor to photo-aging — which are changes seen as dark spots, wrinkles, and leathery-textured skin."
Enter Supergoop's Glow Stick Sunscreen SPF 50. It was one of the only sunscreens I brought with me from Brooklyn (I'm currently staying at my parents' place in New Jersey), and after using it for the first time, I knew it would become a staple in my routine. I have a few reasons: Unlike most SPFs, it's completely translucent and never leaves a white cast or chalky appearance. It's beyond easy to apply — simply swipe, blend, and go — and it doesn't dry out my perennially parched skin like so many other sunscreens.
Aside from broad-spectrum UV protection, Supergoop's Glow Stick also contains skin-loving ingredients like buriti oil, a natural source of the antioxidant beta carotene; pracaxi oil, which is rich in moisturizing fatty acids; and tamanu oil, a known free-radical fighter. It's no wonder my skin feels so good after applying the stuff.
And because it's in stick form and so easy to use on the go, I haven't had an issue with forgetting to reapply it. When I'm working, I just keep it on my desk and reapply every two hours or so, and then I always touch-up when I'm going outside for 20 minutes to walk my dogs. (Better safe than sorry, folks.)
A few final thoughts: Don't forget to wear your sunscreen indoors, y'all. You won't regret it. And if you're in the market for a new SPF, I can't recommend Supergoop's Glow Stick enough. Hydrating, invisible on the skin, and easy to apply — I mean, what more could you want?
