Mental health issues are nothing to be ashamed about. We all go through tough times and need people to guide us through. Other times we need to be there to support others. Whether it’s for yourself, a family member, a friend or colleague, there are many ways to receive help. Depression, alcohol abuse and obsessive-compulsive disorder are the top three most common disorders in Singapore*, but these are just a tiny number of recognised conditions that can impact our happiness and everyday living.

According to a study by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), depression affects six out of every 100 people in Singapore. If you are affected, it’s important to reach out if you need a hand or a listening ear. From online counselling services, to life coaches and psychotherapy clinics, no one has to suffer alone (and contrary to popular belief, getting support doesn’t have to be expensive).

Counselling in Singapore has a reputation of being expensive, but if you’re a Singaporean or PR, it’s possible to get subsidised rates through your GP or neighbourhood polyclinic. With a referral, you could be eligible to pay less than half of what you would usually have to part with for consultations. You can also use the MediSave500 scheme to cover up to 85% of your bill if you suffer from schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder. Alternatively, you can opt for online therapy at affordable rates through LaViCa, a new mental health app.
