“I am always drawn to creamy, skin-like fragrance and try to incorporate those characteristics into each new scent during the creation process,” she tells me via email. The scent is certainly sexy, in an in-your-face kind of way—sweet, pungent, and glittering, just like J.Lo. The bottle, which is blush-toned, seems to play off a softer side of the pop icon, though the snakeskin print cap adds a bit of edge—and Lopez assures me that’s no coincidence. “I want each [of my fragrances] to have special touches that embody me and the things I love,” she says.
Fragrance wasn’t the only thing I wanted to find out about the pop diva. I tried to prod her for the skincare products or treatments she credits for her magical inability to age, and all I got was a demure, “I wash my face and moisturize daily, and I make sure to wash off all my makeup at the end of the day.”
And what about makeup tricks she’s counted on over the years? “I learned early on it is best to go simple when doing your own makeup,” is all I received in return. Alas, it seemed J.Lo would remain ever mysterious about her wrinkle-free visage (at this point, all signs point to the reasoning that she is in fact not of this world, and instead an alien sent to grace us with her beauty and power).
Workout and Self-Care
Though it appeared J.Lo would be tight-lipped about her skincare and makeup regimen, one area she was happy to divulge details about was her workout routine.
“My workouts change with my work schedule and what I am training for,” she explains. “When I am in Vegas doing my All I Have residency, I’m dancing a lot on stage, but I also do a morning workout to keep up my stamina and keep me loose. When I am in New York shooting Shades of Blue, I tend to do more cardio and circuit training.”
Mental note to self: Look into cardio and circuit training, and remember that if J.Lo can perform a jaw-dropping, mesmerizing two-hour show four nights a week and still work out in the morning to keep herself "loose" then I sure as hell can drag myself to the gym one night a week.
Speaking of her residency, how does she keep herself from burning out or getting tired like a normal human might? “It’s always about making sure that you are getting enough rest, drinking enough water, and taking care of yourself off stage,” she says to me. “I have certain after-show routines, like making sure I take off all my makeup or stretching my muscles. I also frequently get massages to loosen up my body and have toxins flushed out of my body.” (So the next time you balk at the price of a massage, remember that you are simply doing your body a favor and following in J.Lo's footsteps.)
Finally, I posed her one last question: After 20 plus years in the industry, what is the most important beauty lesson she knows now that she didn't know her in her 20s? As it turns out, J.Lo is just like the rest of us in one key way. “The biggest lesson for me has been about balance,” she says. “You need to make sure you make time for yourself.” If that isn't encouragement to draw up a bubble bath, put on a face mask, and blast All I Have next time the stress kicks in, I don't know what is. Thank you, J.Lo.
“I am incredibly involved in the creative process for all of my fragrances… JLust is a perfect example of this,” says J.Lo.
