Beauty Products Ishonest Editors Fell in Love with While Working from Home

Curated by Claudia Shannon / Research Scientist / ishonest

Staying hopeful and optimistic right now sometimes feels difficult (if not impossible), so having a good distraction can be incredibly helpful. Here at ishonest, our escape has always been beauty, where it's often as much about self- care as it is about aesthetics — and right now, most of us are leaning harder into that escape than ever. Whether that means spending a little more time on our skin-care routines, trying out new hairstyles, or dipping into the eye shadows we've never known quite what to do with, we're relearning that beauty can be a refuge in dark times.

And while it's always part of our job to try products to give you (our lovely readers) nothing but the best, we also often do it just as much for ourselves. During this time of uncertainty, we're figuring out which products we really can't live without (or in this case, can't quarantine without). For some of us, it's something as simple as a headband you can buy at your local drugstore, but for others, it's a $290 facial massager.

Indie Lee I-Recover Body Soak

“I've been hunkered down at my parents' home in Knoxville for the past several weeks and found myself without my usual collection of relaxing bath products. Tucked away in my mom's beauty cabinet was the Indie Lee I-Recover Body Soak, which I happily borrowed. Just a few scoops of this blend of rosemary, sage, and lavender has been helping me unwind at the end of each day and return to normalcy, if only for 20 minutes in the tub." — Lauren Swanson, senior commerce editor

Retrouvé Baume Ultime Body Oil

"The unique texture of the Retrouvé Baume Ultime Body Oil makes applying it a dream. Unlike most body oils that tend to drip everywhere, its thicker consistency allows me to really work it into the skin. My favorite time to apply it is post-shower, before bed. You'll wake up to the smoothest legs and arms that'll last till your next shower, sans any grease stains." — Kat Suico, assistant beauty editor

Glossier Birthday Balm Dotcom

"My favorite Glossier Balm Dotcom is usually the mint, but I've been wearing the glittery birthday one because we could all use a little sparkle right about now." — Jihan Forbes, editor

Femmue Flower Infused Fine Mask

"The clear jelly of the Femmue Flower Infused Fine Mask has real camellia flower petals and extract to deeply moisturize and brighten skin — but it also smells incredibly dreamy. Whenever I smooth it onto my skin, it's like sticking my nose in a bouquet of fresh flowers or visiting a botanical garden. I find the rose- like scent is calming. And after rinsing off the mask, I swear my skin looks glassier and plumper. Supposedly, it doubles as a sleeping mask too, but I haven’t had a chance to try it out that way." — Devon Abelman, beauty editor

Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Cream

"Being cooped up in my tiny Brooklyn apartment for a month now has made me realize a few things: I'm severely dehydrated, I'm a big fan of snacking, and my poor, weathered hands have seen better days. In an effort to combat the latter, I've started carrying a tube of Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Cream with me wherever I go (which is to say not very far, considering my space is approximately 350 square feet) to hydrate my dry, cracked hands in between Zoom meetings and excessive handwashing sessions." — Sarah Kinonen, associate beauty director

Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape and Fill

"While working from home, I’ve been going easy on the makeup, but I still fill in my brows before all my Zoom calls — and this is my go-to, my number one babe, my true love till I die. Even if I roll out of bed five minutes before my morning meeting, I still have enough time to make my eyebrows look bushy and full before I dial in from the couch. This pencil comes in 12 shades, so you’re almost guaranteed to find one that works for you." — Rosemary Donahue, wellness editor

Glow by Daye Lavender Thai Satin Bonnet

"As much as I want to lie and say I've woken up every day during quarantine and done my hair, the reality is my hair has been in two mismatched smushed pigtails since we started self-isolation. The Glow by Daye Lavender Thai Satin Bonnet has been my best friend, protecting and hiding this two-week-old bed head. My favorite part of the bonnet is that it's adjustable so I can customize it to whatever shape my hair decides to take. It's also reversible: One side has a floral lavender print while the other side is a deep purple." — Gabi Thorne, editorial assistant

Laneige Lip Glowy Balm

"Applying this daytime version of my favorite lip mask is pretty much the closest I get to putting on makeup these days. It's super hydrating, not sticky at all, and smells incredible. Plus, my lips feel great hours after I use it, so I'm not stuck in that dreaded cycle of having to apply the balm 10 times a day to feel moisturized." — Kara McGrath, deputy editor

Ole Henriksen C-Rush Brightening Gel Crème Moisturizer

"A dewy complexion is always the goal. Thankfully, it's not too difficult to achieve with Ole Henriksen's C-Rush Brightening Gel Crème moisturizer. The silky-smooth cream leaves no room for dehydration and my skin always looks moisturized and radiant, even when I've been staying in." —Talia Gutierrez, beauty assistant

Overtone Orange for Brown Hair Complete System

"A little of Overtone's magical hair-coloring conditioner goes a long way (and I stocked up before the shelter-in-place order), which allows me to maintain my clementine-orange hair on my own." — Sam Escobar, digital editorial director

ReFa Carat

"Facial massaging is something I'd like to do on the regular, but when it comes time for that final step in my routine, I can never find the energy. In reality, my skin-care tools sit in my bathroom cabinet gathering dust, relegated to no more than a decorative accessories. But since I've been spending weeks at home, I've finally committed to face-rolling every day. I use the ReFa Carat, which simulates the kneading sensation of an esthetician. It's also helps release some of the tension in my jaw from hours of grinding my teeth at the computer screen." — Jessica Cruel, features director

Saturday Skin Pore Clarifying Toner

"I love Saturday's Skin's Pore Clarifying Toner for when my breakouts get really bad. It has tea tree oil in it, which calms down inflammation and redness, and glycolic acid to gently lift dead skin cells to give me smooth skin. I've also noticed the appearance of my pores has decreased significantly since I started using this." — Audrey Noble, beauty reporter

Scunci Interlock Headwraps

"Whether I'm working from home, working out (also from home right now, obviously), or doing my skin-care routine, these headbands are such a comfortable, lightweight, cute way to keep my hair out of my face. They're super affordable too, so you can snag them in lots of shades to rotate the colors and never get bored." — Marci Robin, contributing editor

Tammy Fender Bulgarian Lavender Body Oil

"I'm now an official home-school teacher, so here's a science lesson for you: The scent of lavender can ease tension and anxiety. I've been keeping this wonderful body oil in my shower and spreading it over my damp skin right before I step out. For maximum relaxation, Tammy herself has told me to take a page from the Ayurvedic tradition and massage the oil toward my heart. I use long strokes on my arms and legs, circular ones on my chest and stomach." — Jenny Bailly, executive beauty director

Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops

"While I don't really feel like putting a full face of foundation on every day to go, well, nowhere, I've been wearing Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops. I apply one pump into the palm of my hand and pat it into my skin, just like you would with a serum. It gives my skin such a nice tint that makes me look like I'm glowing and have seen daylight during work hours. I've been living off the travel-sized version, so right now my biggest fear (aside from the obvious pandemic at hand) is running out. Thank God, a little goes a long way." — Angela Trakoshis, assistant beauty editor

Natralus Australia Essential Paw Paw Ointment

"I carry one of these with me everywhere — which really just means from room to room. I put it on my face, on my lips, on my hands if they're looking particularly raw. I love it." — Cotton Codinha, senior beauty editor
